I celebrated my seventieth birthday yesterday! For a Scorpio, who is conscious of the life and death process, I feel very blessed to have reached this age and to feel so empowered by the work I am doing. I hope you have also been enjoying the current Mercury trine the North Node. In these days we have a chance to fulfil our destiny through the ideas and communications we are having.
Venus is also trine Eris at 25 degrees of Aries, so our values and relationships are working with our diversity consciousness for those of us who are developing spiritually. At the unconscious level, however, we are likely to be getting on our high-horse about something we value, and speaking our mind about how we see it, without regard for the consequences.
When we are still at the personal planet level of consciousness, and sensing Eris' influence unconsciously, we tend to get caught up in the battles in our lives. These confrontations shine light on parts of ourselves that we have denied or pushed into the unconscious, or simply taken for granted. We need discord to grow, because it’s only in the to-and-fro of opposing points of view that change occurs.
At the unconscious level, she is teaching us to stop being fooled, or to stop fooling ourselves. At the same time, she is also likely encouraging us to be competitive, and to take any advantage when we can, because ‘everyone else does!’. When we buy into the rampant greed and selfishness of the capitalist system, it convinces us that there is no other way - that the rat race is the only game in town, so we join it with Eris’ whole-heartedness.
We can see this trine in the US election. At the unconscious level Eris motivates us to go to any lengths to be included in some enterprise or social group, even if it means compromising ourselves in the process. Or we could be unable to compromise and so not be allowed to participate. As a result, we may feel alienated and excluded from any meaningful social interaction.
As we develop spiritually, Eris encourages us to simultaneously see ourselves in an uncompromising way and be inclusive in our world view. We tend to fool ourselves and overlook our shortcomings just to get through each day, but Eris draws her strength from the unflinching nature of her understanding. It’s all valuable to her and we’ll only be complete and embrace our full power when we accept our multifaceted nature.
She teaches us to maintain a steady spirit through all crises by being open to the promptings of love and sympathy. This is vital for our spiritual growth because it gives us the strength and courage necessary to take the spiritual risks required. It encourages us to develop an open heart, which is essential for personal transformation and expanded consciousness.
So we are into a couple of days when those of us working on a spiritual level can learn to value everything and everyone for who they truly are, and work through the crises in our lives by opening our heart, enabling expanded consciousness.
Uranus is also semi-sextile Eris within 1 degree, with both planets traveling retrograde at the moment, and the exact semi-sexile occurring early next month. This aspect will go out of 1 degree orb in early January, so we are into a couple of months when our intuitive consciousness is flowing with out diversity consciousness, for those of us working on a spiritual level.
Those at the unconscious level, however, will likely be fermenting revolution through through the chaos and discord that they are creating in the world. Remember, at this level we have to learn to stop being fooled, or to stop fooling ourselves, so the chaos-mongers are doing important work, and we all benefit from them doing it in the long term.
Eris Early Scholarship
I have a handful of Early Scholarships for those who want to embrace the open-hearted, uncompromising yet inclusive grace of Eris, with the support of a friendly international group of astrologers and astrology students. This is the only time these best-value scholarships on Eris will be offered, so I encourage you to grab the opportunity.
And just a note to the beginners to say that you are very welcome to jump into Eris as a non-astrologer, particularly if you are the sort of person who doesn’t get worried when you don’t understand something, but can express where you are with your own learning, and ask for help when you need it. With this approach, you will enjoy the courses even if you have no astrological knowledge.
We are all beginners with these new planets and in the classes we work together to understand them. You will find that you get support and assistance from the other students, so you can pick up the astrology as you go, just by immersing yourself in it and participating in the Zooms and through the posts on the blog. We are actually working on our spiritual growth as we onboard the consciousness of each of these new planets, so that’s where our focus is. The astrology is just the means to that end.
And remember, this course has our new structure with a choice of two Zoom times, giving the British and Europeans a new morning option which is proving very popular. This new Zoom time also gives those in Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul and Perth, an afternoon option, and other Aussies & Kiwis an early evening option.
Join us if you can on Eris, and thanks for your work embracing these new aspects of consciousness.
Love and laughter

“I have been sensing a reciprocity in my study of the dwarf planets. As I shift focus and embrace each of their unique energies, I am in turn rewarded by a richer understanding of myself and the world in which we live.” Alison Glennie, Ireland
"I have loved being present in 9 DPU classes with Melissa. As a teacher and a convenor Melissa holds a particularly open-hearted, open-minded space for sharing and growth. She brings and encourages lightness, humour and warmth to the classes. Her level of commitment and enquiry mean she is engaged and present equally for all participants, appreciating the beauty and uniqueness of each individual’s journey." Janet Sergeant, NZ, yoga instructor, astrologer.
Happy Birthday Alan
