The topic of Sedna and Health often comes up in my talks and I've mentioned in some that it was only because I got gravely ill, that I did the research for my book on Sedna. I was dealing with a perfect storm of viral infections and auto-immune disorders, all diet triggered, which mean't I couldn't get out of the house for a couple of years and, as I needed something to focus my mind on, I researched Sedna.
Then as I came out and talked about that research, I got steadily stronger. So I see that period of illness as a Sedna health crisis, through which I was challenged to transcend and access a new level of consciousness.
I also notice this pattern of Sedna health crises changing our lives and moving us in a more spiritual direction in many of the case studies that I looked at for my book. Not all illnesses are Sedna illnesses, but Sedna does use any pressure she can to get us onto the spiritual path, and one of these is illness.
Let’s look at this proposition in a case study of Edgar Cayce, looking at his Sedna house placement, at his aspects and at transits to his natal Sedna at key points. The quotes, unless otherwise attributed, are from the book ‘Edgar Cayce, My Life as a Seer’.
Edgar Cayce
Wikipedia tells us: Edgar Cayce was an American clairvoyant who answered questions on subjects as varied as healing, reincarnation, wars, Atlantis, and future events while asleep. A biographer gave him the nickname, The Sleeping Prophet. Some consider him the true founder and a principal source of the most characteristic beliefs of the New Age movement. He is also notable for his contributions to the notions of diet and health, particularly the issues of food combining, acid/alkaline diet, and the therapeutic use of food.
He had Sedna conjunct his Sun in the eighth house of the spirit world, opposite the Part of Fortune in the second house of material reality, both tempered and strengthened by the squares to Jupiter, the planet of expansion, together with Nessus, the centaur of radical change, in the fifth house of creativity and to Quaoar, the dwarf planet of new perspectives, in the eleventh house of ideals. A powerful, but stressful, grand cross.
This is the engine of Cayce’s effect on the world, the eighth house seer, bringing new perspectives to our ideals and promoting lots of radical change in the way we run our personal lives so we have a life at ease in material reality.
With Sedna in the eighth house we have likely spent a number of lifetimes exploring metaphysical themes from various angles and enter this life with a deep knowing of which we are seldom conscious and some karmic challenges and likely karmic abilities which will be illustrated by the aspects. Sedna in the eighth can also indicate psychic or intuitive contact with the spiritual world.
Angel guides first appeared to Edgar at the age of 13. He experienced an angelic presence who promised he’d be a healer. He first thought it was his mother, until he ran into her room and she sent him back to bed. That day he was in a daze in school, couldn’t spell and was kept after class. That night he slept on his spelling book and remembered every word. Until then he had done poorly in school; afterward he did well.
A look at his transits for this period shows transiting Neptune was sextile his natal Sedna from April 1889 to June the following year. Transiting Chiron was trine natal Sedna from September 1890 to February 1891 and transiting Jupiter was sextile natal Sedna from August to October 1890.
So the transit of Neptune, the planet of visions, sextile with his natal Sedna opened him to the appearance of the angel guides, which was followed by a period of healing and and doing well at school, signified by the trine from transiting Chiron, the centaur of wounding and healing and the sextile from transiting Jupiter, the planet of expansion.
He lost his voice when he was working in his first job as a door-to-door insurance salesman with his father. He hated the work and the loss of his voice forced him to stop doing it and change profession. If we look at his transits for this period we find transiting Saturn was square Sedna from January to July 1900 and October/November 1900. And transiting Pluto was quintile Sedna from October 1899 to June 1900.
Here the evolutionary quintile from Pluto, the planet of transformation, through the first part of this year set up the opportunity for spiritual growth and the stressful square from Saturn at the beginning and the end focussed that learning process into problems in the structure of his life and in his body.
In 1901 he was hypnotised by a magician-hypnotist, who revived his voice temporarily. This experience connected Edgar with hypnotism and led to more experiments in trance reading, which eventually heals his voice. This in turn leads to readings for others and in 1902 he gives a reading that cures a child, his first “miracle case”, after specialists could do nothing.
From August to December 1901 and June 1902 to August 1903 he had transiting Neptune square natal Sedna.
Heredity, Illness and Spiritual Development
Edgar Cayce often spoke of the role of heredity and environment with respect to the principle of cause and effect, both in this lifetime and others. Interestingly, Cayce's system includes the Hindu concept of karma. As Cayce put it,
"Karma is cause oft of hereditary conditions so called. Then indeed does the soul inherit that it has builded in its experience with its fellow man in material relationships. Thus the transformational potential of illness is inherent in many Cayce readings where heredity is cited as a contributing factor of disease. The potential relationship between heredity, illness and spiritual development represents a typical example of how the Cayce philosophy integrates various disciplines into a unitary worldview."
So Cayce gives us an insight here into the power of Sedna, which I suggest is her ability to combine various disciplines into a unitary world view and also into the astrological meaning of Sedna, which I suggest combines heredity, evolutionary change and spiritual development into a unitary world view.
Making the world Transparent to Transcendence
I'm going to suggest that Sedna consciousness involves active participation and learning to act together as part of an intricate social system, each playing our part. And, if this is true, then we have to ask how can we know our part in the system?
And we might get a hint of the answer to this from Joseph Campbell, who was an American mythologist, writer, and lecturer, best known for his work in comparative mythology and comparative religion. He had Sedna conjunct Jupiter, the planet of expansion, and Mercury, the planet of ideas and communication, and the Sun, his willpower, all in the sixth house of service. This conjunction gave him a very good insight into the power of Sedna.
Wikipedia tells us: He was a strong believer in the psychic unity of mankind and its poetic expression through mythology and he used this concept to express the idea that the whole of the human race can be seen as engaged in the effort of making the world "transparent to transcendence”, by showing that underneath the world of phenomena lies an eternal source, which is constantly pouring its energies into this world of time, suffering, and ultimately death.
He was talking here about Sedna and giving us a clue as to how we can know what to do with our lives from the Sednian perspective. His belief in the psychic unity of mankind doesn’t mean we all have to develop our psychic abilities to know what to do, although this would undoubtedly help, it means that on a soul level we already know what to do. And on a mundane level we don’t have to know… we just have to surrender to the inevitable, one foot in front of the other, along the path of our lives and embrace the spiritual growth opportunities at each point.
Campbell argued that to achieve the task of making the world transparent to transcendence we need to speak about things that existed before and beyond words, a seemingly impossible task, the solution to which lies in the metaphors found in myths. He believed these metaphors to be statements that point beyond themselves into the transcendent.
Molecular Machines
Alright let's take a bit of a leap here. I've talked a lot about two discovery events that I link with Sedna, Neural Networks and Dark Matter, but another that I link her with is the discovery of Molecular Machines. Discovery events are paradigm shifting events around the discovery of the planet which give us a clue to understanding the planet's meaning. We can think of the discovery of electricity with Uranus, or nuclear power with Pluto.
Sedna was discovered in 2003 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry that year was awarded for groundbreaking research on how cells communicate and co-operate to form a living eco-system. The prize citation tells us:
“Through pioneering discoveries concerning the water and ion channels of cells, this year’s Nobel Laureates have contributed to fundamental chemical knowledge on how cells function. All living matter is made up of cells. A single human being has as many as the stars in a galaxy, about one hundred thousand million. The various cells – e.g. muscle cells, kidney cells and nerve cells – act together in an intricate system in each one of us. The award winners have opened our eyes to a fantastic family of molecular machines: channels, gates and valves, all of which are needed for the cell to function.
“For thousands of millions of cells to be able to function as something other than one large lump, coordination is required. Thus communication between the cells is necessary. The signals sent in and between cells consist of ions or small molecules. These start cascades of chemical reactions that cause our muscles to tense, our eyes to water – indeed, that control all our bodily functions.”
I suggest that on a planetary level Sedna may represent the same process of social coordination which is coming into being, whereby, like cells of a planetary consciousness, we can learn to act together as part of an intricate social system, each playing our part.
Higher Purpose of Illness
So Sedna illnesses, which are ones that affect our spiritual growth, are like the judder bars in between the lanes on the highway, those little raised strips that judder the tyres as we get too close to the edge, letting us know we have to correct our course. If we don’t, the judder continues and, if we ignore it and cross into the other lane, we are in real physical danger.
An illness will frequently cause us to refocus our energy, or change life direction, so Sedna illnesses occur at pivotal points in our lives and may function a bit like proteins do at cell level, acting as channels, gates and valves to facilitate the life path.
